Race Communications vs Xfinity: The quick answer

For most Yuba City homes that can get it, Race comes out ahead. It runs fiber all the way into your home, so your upload speed matches your download speed, installation is free, and it offers speeds up to 10 Gig. Xfinity makes more sense if you want TV or mobile on the same bill, or if you’d rather lock in a price for five years.

If you live in Yuba City and you’re choosing between Race Communications and Xfinity, the two look similar at first glance: both start around $40 a month, both include Wi-Fi equipment, and neither has data caps or contracts. The differences show up in the fine print, in upload speeds, installation fees and what happens to your bill over time.

Below, we break down prices, speeds, fees and what local customers say, so you can pick with all the facts in front of you.

Xfinity’s Two Price Guarantees, Explained

5-year price guarantee: your monthly rate stays the same for five years. Comcast introduced this option in 2025, and it includes a free Xfinity Mobile line for the first year.
1-year price guarantee: $5 to $10 less per month, but the rate is only locked for 12 months. After that, your price can go up.

Current Race offer: 3 months free on Gigabit plans.

Available on Gigabit Internet, 5 Gigabit Internet and 10 Gigabit Internet. Offers can change, so check the details at your address before you order.

Speeds: Download, Upload and Why Both Matter

The biggest difference between Race and Xfinity is upload speed. Race’s speeds are symmetrical, so you upload as fast as you download. Xfinity’s typical upload is 41 Mbps, whichever plan you choose.

<

Plan	Download	Upload
Race Internet 300	305 Mbps	305 Mbps
Xfinity 300 Mbps	352 Mbps	41 Mbps
Race Internet 500	505 Mbps	505 Mbps
Xfinity 500 Mbps	586 Mbps	41 Mbps
Race Gigabit Internet	940 Mbps	940 Mbps
Xfinity 1 Gig	1,172 Mbps	41 Mbps

Typical speeds from each provider’s broadband label. Bars use the same scale. Race’s 5 Gig and 10 Gig plans reach 5,000 and 8,000 Mbps in both directions, too fast to fit this scale.

Speeds are typical speeds from each provider’s broadband label.

To be fair to Xfinity, its typical download speeds run above the plan names, and on 1 Gig it downloads faster than Race. For streaming and browsing, both are more than enough.

Upload speed is what you feel when you send things out: video calls, backing up photos, uploading work files, livestreaming or gaming online.

How long a 2 GB video takes to upload

41 Mbps upload
About 6.5 minutes
Xfinity, any plan
305 Mbps upload
Under 1 minute
Race Internet 300
940 Mbps upload
About 17 seconds
Race Gigabit Internet

If several people in your home work remotely, take classes on video or back up phones to the cloud, upload speed is where you’ll notice the difference.

Installation, Equipment and Fees

Race has fewer one-time costs. A Race technician installs your service for free, and Xfinity charges for installation either way.

Cost	Race Communications	Xfinity
Professional installation	Free	$100
Self-installation $39.99
Wi-Fi router	Included	Included
Monthly service fee	$9.95/mo Tech Assure (added to every plan)	None
Autopay required for listed price	No	Yes, from a bank account
Early termination fee	None (no contracts)	None (no contracts)

Race’s Tech Assure fee appears under each Race price in the price table above, so you can see the full monthly cost at a glance.

Extras: Apps, Security and Bundles

Both providers include an app for managing your home Wi-Fi. Xfinity offers more ways to bundle; Race keeps it to internet and home phone.

Race Communications
- Race CommandIQ app with parental controls, cybersecurity features and Quality of Service
- Home phone from $10/mo
- No mobile or TV service
Xfinity
- Xfinity app with Xfinity Cybersecure and parental controls
- First line of Xfinity Mobile Select free for one year on plans of 300 Mbps or faster
- TV and streaming from $65/mo
- Home phone for $40/mo

If you’d like one bill for internet, mobile and TV, Xfinity is the easier fit. If you mainly want fast, reliable internet and stream TV through apps, Race covers what you need, and its home phone starts $30/mo lower.

What Yuba City Residents Say

When a Yuba City resident asked the r/YubaCity community about Race Internet, the replies came from people who had used Race for several months. The same three themes came up: reliability, an easy install, and a better experience than they’d had with Xfinity.

I’ve had Race Internet for 9 months. It’s been very reliable, much better than Xfinity ever was for me.

Race customer, on r/YubaCity

Install was fast and easy. Cheaper than Comcast. Higher speed. More reliable. Highly recommended.

Small business owner and Race customer, on r/YubaCity

These are individual experiences, not a survey, but they line up with what fiber is known for: a steady and reliable connection that holds up when the whole household is online.

Fiber vs. Cable: Why the Technology Matters

Race and Xfinity get internet to your home in different ways, and that’s the reason behind most of the differences above.

Race uses fiber to the home. Glass fibers carry data as light all the way into your house. Fiber has room for the same speed in both directions, which is why Race’s uploads match its downloads.
Xfinity uses a hybrid network. Xfinity calls its service “fiber-powered”: fiber carries the signal most of the way, then coaxial cable, the same kind of line used for cable TV, connects your home. Cable networks set aside far less capacity for uploads than downloads, which is why every Xfinity plan uploads at about 41 Mbps.

Fiber also handles busy evenings better, when everyone in the neighborhood is streaming at once, and it’s built to keep up as homes use more bandwidth over the years.
